Courses

We made no changes to the marathon and half marathon courses.

Go to the courses.

The entire course will lead through downtown Cologne, has a width of at least 3 metres and asphalt surface. Nonetheless, there may be bottlenecks on the course due to road works.

Although we will check the status of the roads and clean the roads several times prior to race day the surface may still degrade rapidly.

Please run with care, always look for possible critical sections and inform your fellow runners.

Broadcast on the internet and via radio

On race day (October 4, 2020) we will offer an internet live stream from 8:25 a. m. to 1:45 p.m. on our web site.

Watch the stream on your desktop or mobile! Or use the Cologne Marathon app!

Refreshments – there is no real comparison to us!

There is no other marathon where you find a bigger and better offer of snacks, refreshments and beverages in the finish area than here in Cologne! This is OUR unique selling point!

No desire will be left unfulfilled – it does not matter whether you dream of curd cheese balls, sandwiches with lard, fruits, energy bars, Kölsch beer – just help yourself and enjoy!

Please find the entire refreshment area’s menu here (in German 🇩🇪 only).

Along the course you will find refreshment stations within a distance of approximately 4 kilometres:

  • different refreshments, above all water, bananas, Coca-Cola and Dextro Energy

half marathon

  • 5 refreshment stations
  • different refreshments, above all water, bananas, Coca-Cola and Dextro Energy

Please have a look onto the course including the refreshment stations here.

Chronometry

Logo raceresult

Chronometry is exclusively carried out by raceresult’s transponders on the back of the bib number (except for the kids run).

A chip is not necessary for the chronometry any longer.

Please do NOT use magnetic pins or the like for fixing the bib number. They can have a negative impact on chronometry and the detection of your times.

The first 10 finishers per sex will be ranked by gross time and be marked by * in the result list.

Please be aware of the time limit of the chosen competition!

You will be contacted by the pace car driver and the marshals at an early stage when you tend to fall out of the time limit.

Should you be overtaken by the pace car you are no longer within the secured event area. From this point on you will not be insured any more and you will have to leave the course.

This means:

  • half marathon: 2:45 hours net
  • marathon, relay team marathon and school marathon: 6:00 hours net

Net means your time from start to finish.

Finish at Cologne Cathedral – pure emotion!

As soon as you will turn around the corner at CologneTourism there will be only 100 metres left! Show us your pleasure and exitement!!!

So that you may better orientate yourself in advance please have a look onto the finish area map here.

  • The first runner must turn left before the “Severinstorburg” and run to “Chlodwigplatz”, where the first change takes place. Line 16 goes directly from Neumarkt to Chlodwigplatz, which is also served by lines 15 and 17. From Neumarkt it is a 15-20 minutes walk.
  • Transition zone 2 is located on  Aachener Straße directly at the Aachener Weiher. Since the lines 1 and 7 do not run on October 7 between Aachener Str./Gürtel and Neumarkt, we recommend  to take the lines 12 and 15 to Rudolfplatz and walk from there. Or take the lines 1 and 13 to Aachener Str./Gürtel and walk from there. From the meeting point Neumarkt it is a 15-20 minutes walk to transition zone 2.
  • Transition zone 3 is at the Ebertplatz and can be reached directly from the Neumarkt with the lines 16 and 18. Lines 12 and 15 also go to Ebertplatz. From the meeting point Neumarkt it is a 15-20 minutes walk to transition zone 3.

The first runner of your relay team will be sorted into the marathon field and its starting blocks (There will be not any separate starting block for the teams any longer!).

Please find the colour of your starting block (e. g. “RED”) on your bib number.

Your relay team will be allocated according to the expected time given in the registration. In case you do not add any time you will automatically start from the last starting blocks.

The single legs of the relay team marathon distance will be approx. 12.0 | 11.5 | 6.0 | 12.7 kilometres.

The transition zones will be announced by signs approximately 100 meters prior to its beginning.

Separate areas for lining-up will be marked by signs according to bib numbers. Please leave the zones at the corresponding exits only.

Please do not forget to hand over the bib number with the transponder and bib number belt to the next runner of your relay team.

We will also place timing mats in the transition zones in order to be able to publish split times for all relay team members.

NOTE: Please cross also these mats!

It is possible to substitute a runner within your relay team or change the starting order.

You can do so with the edit link in your email confirmation of registration prior to October 4, 2020.

Note: Only the fourth and last runner will be allowed to cross the finish line!

This final runner will get all 4 medals after the finish.

The split times of all 4 runners will be printed on your certificate as well as the the overall time and positioning.

Neumarkt will serve as the meeting point for all teams of the Generali Relay Team Marathon.

Located with best transport connections in downtown Cologne you can meet here prior to the start, hand in your kit bags and get easily to the start and transition zones by KVB trams and subways.

After the event you will meet here again. Music, moderation, a street food area as well as medal engraving and a chat with the other finishers will complete your perfect marathon day.

We will also install a video wall there and broadcast the race.

The award ceremony for the relay team marathon will take place on stage within the finish area.
